Utopia Rambles gathers together forty-four people to respond to the challenge of employing artistic processes to imagine and perform, in real time, in Les Rambles Area, while simultaneously providing material for the continually mutating exhibition at the Santa Mònica arts centre.

This temporary community launches interventions in the centre’s immediate physical and social environment, in an exercise of utopian creation and generation of imaginaries embedded in Les Rambles area.

Open to visitors on the second floor of the Santa Mònica, the Acció space is presented as a workspace that showcases the operating agreements followed throughout the course of the project. These agreements are not governed by the logic of majorities, but rather by the curatorial team’s capacity to communicate, listen and cooperate.

Running parallel, on the first floor, the Arxiu space displays original material from the cooperative process carried out in 2018 by the transdisciplinary team UTE Km Zero on the transformation of Les Rambles. This archive is itself a source of utopian imaginaries and places on view testimonial traces of the public cooperation process that endeavoured to propose a rescue project for Les Rambles.

The exhibition resulting from this process is open in the cloister of the Santa Mònica from 28 March to 21 May.

A call for active participation

How can individual imaginaries, resources and skills enter into dialogue and come together in a collective intelligence? How can these assemblies rethink and act on specific territories with a utopian vision? Utopia Rambles aims to become a source of inspiration on these questions.

Presented as an open-source toolbox, the Action space offers a detailed presentation of the methodology that is transforming, in real time, a group of forty-four participants into a multiform, complex, organic body of collective action. At the same time, the Arxiu space documents the set of ideas and strategies imagined for Les Rambles Area by the Rambles Community.

An attentive visit to these two complementary spaces offers the public an opportunity to scrutinise the internal mechanisms of a complex collectivisation device that can be reinterpreted and replicated for the utopian reconstruction of any space currently in need of transformation.
