THE MÒNIQUES

The Mòniques are the 21 artists-in-residence at Santa Mònica. They are selected through an open call published each spring, aimed at individuals interested in developing applied research and artistic experimentation at the center, utilizing its available resources and programmed content.

The residencies are temporary stays of eleven months, carried out in person at the center. This model fosters a shared workspace experience, encouraging exchange among residents and enriching it with a collective dimension.

The Mòniques work collectively in working groups called "guilds." The main function of these guilds is to engage with the center's content, generating new creations through a transmedia approach based on collectively defined objectives. The transmedia actions developed by the guilds should be understood as experimental trial-and-error processes with a mediation horizon—that is, they aim to explore new ways of opening up the center’s content to diverse audiences.

Prototypes

Have you ever wondered why museum and contemporary art center texts often use words that many of us don’t understand? If the memories you have of the exhibitions you’ve visited could be eaten, what would they smell and taste like? Why is it that the sounds of exhibitions you visit usually cannot be read, and images cannot be heard? How do you think it would feel to participate in a museum’s family workshop with your feline companion?

These are some of the questions explored by the experimental mediation device prototypes created by Les Mòniques during their residency. Following a trial-and-error approach, some of these prototypes may evolve into stable devices, while others remain temporary experiences. We explain how they work so that, if you’re interested, you can replicate and/or adapt them to your own context.
