EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES

At Santa Mònica, we understand mediation and artistic education not as a translation or interpretation of the centre’s contents, but as a critical re-reading of the discourses and questions generated, to expand their complexity, foster reflection, and open new questions for the collective transformation of the environment. This work is mainly organized into three action lines: the art centre as a laboratory for artistic mediation through the Mòniques programme, the art centre as a tool for education and research, and Santa Mònica as a common good.

Schools and teachers

We promote learning situations as spaces for research and experimentation, starting from questions instead of affirmations, and breaking down hierarchies between who teaches and who learns. We foster collaborative work processes that are slow-paced, focused on listening, care, and artistic experimentation, to activate critical imagination and generate new shared meanings. From here, we develop different projects and resources connected with educational centres and artistic, educational, and social initiatives in the neighbourhood and the territory.

Network and community

At Santa Mònica, we work in a network with local and international agents and entities, linking artists, artistic collectives, and cultural agents.

We understand the centre and art as a common good, meaning a public, accessible, inclusive, and non-elitist resource, a space for welcoming and reflection on contemporary issues, which at the same time acts as a communal device for community organization and resource redistribution. In this sense, we promote and participate in networks and initiatives that generate dialogues with citizens, situated and integrated in the environment, and connected with other artistic, educational, and social initiatives.

Actions

The lines of work in mediation and education also materialized in the research and prototypes developed by Mòniques and in other situated actions that address transversal issues for the centre and contemporary society, such as sustainability, accessibility, climate emergency, or active participation.
