Off the record, converses després del vendaval

Over the last fifteen years, Catalonia has experienced an effervescence of struggles led by social movements that have strongly challenged the political system that emerged from the Transition. But after a time when great changes seemed possible, we now find ourselves in a context of hangover and demobilisation, in which the extreme right is growing and social, political and cultural rights are being cut back. What happens when the wind that has propelled the popular struggles stops? And what role does critical culture play in stirring consciences and rekindling the flame?

Off the record, conversations after the gale is a four-part series directed and presented by Roger Palà, journalist and co-director of CRÍTIC, in which the great conflicts of our times are tackled through conversations with the seven collectives that have participated in the exhibition After the gale. Climate, gender, housing, public space, tourism, basic income, technodeobedience, migrations... In journalism, the most important things are often explained off the record.

Episodes available online through XRCBIVOOX and Spotify.

Off the record #1, Public space, housing and tourism, with Sitesize and Tirititrans Trans Trans Trans

The occupation and use of public space, and especially the problems associated with the right to housing and tourist overcrowding, have been the first area of work of the SubRosa space, a dialectic space to explore controversial debates. To complement the conversation, in the first chapter of the Off the record series we spoke with Elvira Pujol and Joan Vila-Puig, from the Sitesize collective, and Edén Provecho, from the company Tirititrans trans trans. Social, political and climate rights, the privatised use of essential resources, massification and commodification of public space and gender discrimination.

Off the record #2, Technodesobedience

Access to information technologies and their servitudes, programmed obsolescence and the possibility of disobedience in the era of big tech were some of the subjects of debate in the second SubRosa space in the framework of the exhibition After the gale. To complement the conversation, in the second chapter of the series Off the recuerdo we spoke with Mònica Ballesteros and Laura del Valle, members of the Laboratorio de Arte Comunitario (LAC), and with Gigi de Ermoggine, one of the driving forces behind the Transfeminist collective La Creatura.

Off the record 3, Margins (Work, migration, governance)

The discriminations implied by the law on foreigners, social inequalities, precariousness and the invisibility of the work of priests were the subject of debate in the third SubRosa space, held in the framework of the exhibition Després del vendaval. To complement the conversation, in the third chapter of the series Off the record we talk about what it means to live on the margins of society. We do so with Carina Fulladosa, member of Sindillar, the domestic workers' union; Edén Provecho, from the company Tirititrans Trans Trans; and Laura del Valle and Mònica Ballesteros, from the Laboratori d'Art Comunitari.

Off the record 4, Universal Basic Income

In the fourth and final episode of Off The Record, we discuss Universal Basic Income, featuring an interview with one of the curators of the exhibition Després del vendaval, Montserrat Moliner. We also hear from one of the collectives that participated, Agitació Diska. What are the potential benefits of Universal Basic Income? What improvements could its implementation bring to the culture and creation sector? Is it possible to sustain it economically with existing public resources?
