How are books born in the era of desktop publishing? How does the book transcend when mixed with mediation, activism or curatorship? How do the institution and independent projects influence each other? What innovative practices do we detect? And is "what's new" always new?
This workshop proposes a series of conversations with different figures - national and international - from the contemporary publishing world as a starting point to establish a space for reflection and generate knowledge through the interaction of participants.
We invite creators, publishers, artists and enthusiasts to participate in two virtual sessions and two laboratory sessions where we will address different ways of making editions, to detect their transformative potential with respect to tradition and to share concerns.
We will chat online about projects born both in institutional environments and in independent contexts with: Lluc Mayol (Valencia), Iera Delp and Sarah Renau (La Caldera, Barcelona), León Muñoz Santini (Gato Negro publishing house, Mexico City), Sara Catenacci and Lisa Andreani (MACRO Museum, Rome), Élodie Mugrefya and Peter Westenberg (Constant Brussels).
We will explore methods, workflows, hybridisation of roles in publishing or the digital world, technologies and practices beyond the book in the strictest sense. We will also open debate on what content we consider a priority for publishing in the immediate present, questioning innovation and inventing challenges.
Each virtual session will activate a laboratory/forum session with a restricted group of 15 people, to create a circle of publisher-readers. Here we will activate dynamics to address the same issues in a more horizontal and more physical way, collectively re-imagining our practices.
