Situation 7. Weeds on the fringes, other gardens and collective insubordinations

Collective learning and research programme

(creating) Situations
From 3 October 2024 to 30 January 2025
(crear) Situacions: art i pensament participatius

The seventh edition of (creating) Situacions will be related to the exhibition cycle that will take place at the Santa Mònica during the autumn of 2024,  Després del vendaval. (After the gale). The exhibition brings together 7 collectives that unite powerful political and poetic practices to challenge systemic violence and rights violations and occupy the liminal spaces of institutional gaps.

In parallel, the exhibition will be accompanied by a chronology that will show, from 1992 to the present day, the activist and artistic collectives that have developed this line of work in the territory.

Programme

The programme has been conceived with the aim of activating a temporary community of research and learning. Within this framework, the people taking part will share and develop tools to collectively outline and analyse various situations in this environment of situated and shared learning, generated around the Santa Mònica exhibition cycle, as well as others linked to other cultural proposals in the city. We will have dialogues with the curatorial team and the artists involved in the exhibition cycle, workshops with research groups from the centre and guests, with the aim of enriching the shared learning processes.

  • Sessions with curators and artists participating in the exhibition cycle: these sessions will address the background to the curatorial processes of creation that take place in both the conception and the unfolding of the exhibition cycle.
  • Research and experimentation sessions with the artists in residence and other guests: the Santa Mònica hosts 21 resident artists who, organised into 7 guilds, deploy over a period of 11 months research and experimentation devices in artistic mediation that share with the exhibition some of their starting questions. In these sessions we will delve for a moment into their research, which always has a practical side, to get some examples and a general overview of the possibilities that a centre like the Santa Mònica currently offers. There will also be some sessions with guests linked to artistic practices.
  • Spaces of encounter through reading: collective spaces in which texts are not containers of content, but devices for plotting obliquities.
  • Cultural agenda: in some sessions, the programme will dialogue with proposals and projects from other spaces in Barcelona.

Programme run by: P.L.A.S., a provisional alliance for the generation of discomfort and other derivations of thinking by doing, with the will to activate a temporary community of research and learning.

Who is it for?

The programme is designed for people who are interested in artistic practices and the processes they involve: curatorship, mediation, exhibition cycles, production, materialities, interiors... The aim is to activate situated communities of research and learning.

Places are limited. There are no age requirements, no previous qualifications, and no curriculum. For this reason, interest and commitment to this proposal and to the community involved will be valued.

(creating)Situations: participatory art and thinking

Militancia Alegre. Tejer resistencias, florecer en tiempos tóxicos

Every four months, the Santa Mònica arts centre develops an exhibition cycle through collective creation processes. These processes are driven by a close and radical curatorial practice, understood as a form of accompaniment and care. Through this exercise of institutional de-hierarchy, the new Santa Mònica embraces methodologies that encourage diverse situations of horizontal participation.

Along the same lines, (creating) Situations offers a context for collective learning and research that analyses exhibition cycles and their creative processes from the inside and, in turn, generates new situations for approaching them. A tool designed to understand and become immersed in these methodologies from within.

With this programme, the Santa Mònica opens its doors to people interested in artistic practices and in the configuration of these exhibition processes, from the joint and situated co-creation with curators, artists and other agents involved. The aim is to interpret and reactivate different situations within the exhibition device.

The title (creating) Situations is inspired by approaches that displace the model that establishes a game between ‘author, work and public’, inherited in modernity and still very present in our shared imaginaries. Thus, the character of collective involvement not only permeates each of the Santa Mònica's exhibition cycles, but also aims to be the vehicle of this programme, with the aim of activating artistic thought and research from a communal construction committed to our present reality. This is why the programme also aims to go beyond the Santa Mònica by establishing connections with other cultural proposals in the city of Barcelona.

Más bien, son la resistencia, la lucha y la transformación vividas las que hacen
posible sentir el poder colectivo, y así, forjar nuevos caminos.
