 EntreActes: estudis sobre una porta

Between 2022 and 2023, the Spaces Guild has observed that the Santa Mònica, between the periods of interval between exhibitions, continues to hold public activities and has its doors open so that the processes of change of cycle can be experienced as a phase or part of the meaning of the centre and of the curatorial direction of the centre. The Spaces Guild also identified a key word: "EntreActo", which was used to designate this period between exhibitions, both by the management team and the gallery staff.

This activity of interviews in the street above the entrance to the Santa Mònica, the EntreActos: studies on a door, attempts to investigate what lies between the outside and the inside, precisely the between, between the space that emanates the atmosphere of the between, we invite you to enter, to go inside, but also to be between, between what was and what can be.

From this idea, the guild proposes to begin to articulate an "umbrella" device, which we would like to call EntreActos, to activate possible interventions that can be experienced in the next exhibition intervals.

In theatre, the intermission is defined in a dramatic performance as an intermission, an interruption between parts of a play. In the intermissions in theatres, more specifically in the old dramatic performances, the intermission (the dance, the comedy numbers, sainete, etc.) had to be a different action from the one that was performed on stage, both aesthetically and relationally, and especially without any technical and spatial necessity, because the technique was just preparing the stage for the next act. This entailed the fact that whatever was going to happen on stage was secondary (so to speak). This is interesting in that, in a way, the relationship of expression and listening between performer and space becomes more horizontal.

This change in the perspective of EntreActos during which the artistic event and the everyday reality of the space where it takes place interests us because it brings us closer to a more empathetic and horizontal organisation, where all the inhabitants of a space are committed to expressing and listening to each other on equal terms, encouraging the active listening of the spectators and increasing the listening and empathy of the artist, a fact that we would like to investigate and link with the devices of the Observaciones Situadas, El Salta de la Fera, Ascensor Social, Lift-Leaks, already developed by the guild during the previous residency.

Invisible Theatre is a practice that gives no importance to theatrical conventions, because it detaches itself from these conventions in order to try, with minimal, non-spectacular, non-visible gestures, to change the orders of relations, their organisation and their everydayness. The Spaces Guild proposes the prototype EntreActos to give a unitary sense to a series of interventions and experimental actions that can be deployed between these specific periods and spaces. EntreActos wants to try to organise the value of minor actions/devices, of simple and investigative qualities and thus, giving them the same importance as the more spectacular activities of the centre, to experiment with other formats and looks within the same centre, within the same door.
