Screening of Tracing Utopia with performative commentary by artist Laia Gimeno.
Tracing Utopia (Catarina de Sousa, Nick Tyson, 2021) is an odyssey into the dreams of a group of queer teenagers in New York City as they try to envision a better world. Directed by Catarina de Sousa and Nick Tyson, this short documentary imagines a form of queer community that transcends time, through visions of a utopia that manifest in the streets, in community spaces and online. A collaborative manifesto that weaves these pasts and futures together. The short film calls for the change that queer youth are fighting for: "As queer teens in Queens, we have these demands to build a better world".
After the screening, the artist Laia Gimeno will offer a performative commentary. "A proposal that, using fragments of utopias as bricks, builds a refuge to inhabit the now. Queer utopias exist in the present, in a present that can also be future or past, in a present that is a refuge. Queer people live out of phase with cisheterolinear times and perceiving utopias exclusively from the (linear) future can make them static, or impossible. With a Minecraft Block I'll build you a castle so you can listen to Arca in peace".

Laia Gimeno Bardis (Torrelles de Llobregat).
With one foot in ruralities and the other in queer studies, she tries to reappropriate folklore to queerise it and generate new possibilities. She recovers traditional dances to hack them, as she has done with her friends from the village in the performance "Galope de Panderetas" (Hangar and Rihihiu Festival) or with her character Pepet del Guaret (Espacio Torrorista). She is currently studying the master's degree Articulaciones (IVAM study programme) thanks to a grant (Complemento Directo) and has moved to her friend Maria's house in Alzira.
She has participated in some artistic residencies (Lo Pati, MERZ Gallery and Onomatopeya del Silenci). She has been awarded a grant with "Utopías Agrocuir" (Sala Art Jove), in this context she has participated in "Distensions" (MACBA and Art Nou). She also likes to speak, even if she is embarrassed, in "Coloquio agroqueer" (Rihihiu) and "Diásporas y Utopías bordes" (Diáspora ebrense).
