Essays and reflections on avant-garde cinema
Theorists, film historians, filmmakers, film critics, students.
Self-managed group with a maximum of 10 members. It is requested a commitment to participate throughout the 8 sessions.
For six years, filmmaker Andrés Duque has been producing a didactic book in powerpoint format entitled "Cine y Vanguardia: Historia de la experimentación en el cine". For this workshop, Duque proposes to share the material, discuss it, revise it and propose new chapters that will be included and that in the future could be used in educational centres. At the Centro Santa Mònica we propose to open a working group dedicated to research focused on essay writing and reflection on film.
Experimental" is a questionable criterion. As Jacques Brunius used to say: "Anything that departs from the routine in a film can be considered experimental". This workshop does not attempt to define or categorise what is experimental cinema, but it does deal with moments in the history of cinema where trial and error have been the force of radical changes on a narrative, aesthetic and technological level.
Axes of study:
1.Aesthetic, artistic movements such as: surrealism, dadaism, situationism, structuralism, paracinema, fluxus, etc.
2. Political, anticipation and accompaniment of political struggles, collectivisms.
3. Theoretical, currents of thought such as feminism and queer theory.
4. Cultural, generational movements such as beatnik, hippie, punk and Afrofuturism.
5. Technological, the history of cinema is the history of its technology and in this sense transforms the ways in which we produce and consume images and the very definition of what cinema is.
An initiative of the Santa Mònica Creation Laboratory project, coordinated by Andrés Duque and Mònica Rovira.
