January 27 is a day set aside to remember the victims of fascism. Known officially as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it has now become a day that focuses on the subject of historical memory as a democratic tool and a way to express repulsion for any form of fascism.

With more than 143,000 individuals still unaccounted for―not including the country’s lost children, who were effectively stolen—Spain is the second country in the world in total number of disappeared victims of political repression, after the case of the Pol Pot dictatorship in Cambodia. There are more people unaccounted for in Spain than from all crimes of forced disappearance perpetrated in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Guatemala together. Spain is also the only democracy that has not begun any investigation on State terrorism after having ended its period of dictatorship. The UN has repeatedly called on Spain to investigate the crimes of the Franco regime and the cases of disappeared and unaccounted for victims of Franco-era repression. The UN insists on the creation of a commission to investigate the dictatorship’s criminal activity. Furthermore, there are still many mass graves that have not been reopened in Spain, and this is especially so in Catalonia.
As part of their work combining artistic research and intellectual activism, with this project Laura Pinta Cazzaniga and Giacomo Nicola Manenti seek to raise visibility for all those who were eliminated by the Franco regime and remain unaccounted for, individuals who were buried in a lost past, or have been forgotten as a consequence of negligence and omission. In this way the project seeks to encourage a critical gaze with regards to the Franco-era dictatorship and its repressive actions, which have been treated excessively softly, having become part of a nebulous period in the memory of many people, and especially younger generations.

The project Disappeared. Another Memory: the Graves of Franco, is divided into two parts:

The first part consists of two site-specific artistic interventions, to be carried out on the line of Republican Army resistance during the Spanish Civil War in the area of La Fatarella, Terra Alta (Tarragona). They will open to the public on Sunday, January 24, at 12 PM.

The second part features an event at Arts Santa Mònica, to be held on January 27 at 6PM. It features the participation of associations and testimonies, who in different ways have fought to restore justice, dignity and historical memory for the victims of the period from 1936 (the start of the Spanish Civil War) to 1977.
The event includes a series of presentations and the projection of two videos: one is a look at the artistic intervention in La Fatarella, while the other is a documentary by Iñaki Alforja, El cementerio de las botellas (The Cemetery of Bottles). This latter film deals with the exhumation in the cemetery of Fuerte de San Cristóbal (mount of Ezkaba), as carried out by the forensic scientist Francisco Etxeberria and the association Aranzadi.
