Every image contains a latent picture of somewhere else. Both foreign and familiar, mine are from that resonant place between the “here” and the “there”. They form an image of the places I am.
I left my native Quebec in 1985 and, after years of travel, making images in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, I based myself in Catalonia 1995.
It’s clear to me now that there are places we never leave; they travel within us. These photographs and videos were made as I question my feelings about belonging and place, acceptance and change, separation, and the passage of time. They have taken form as I consider the true limits of distant yet simultaneous time zones.
What is the nature of the paradox of ubiquity? How can we exist in more than one place at a time? These are images made in a territory that I have come to call the “dimension of elsewhere”.
The images of Matei Glass (Joseph Winterfeld, Montreal, 1956) have been exhibited internationally and his work can be found in notable public and private collections. Since 1995 Matei Glass has lived in Barcelona.
