Figures of Doubleness

Puppets, Machines and Strings

Exhibition

Exhibition | 08.10.2015 - 10.01.2016 | First floor, Second floor, cloister and residence

The exhibition focuses on otherness through the mediums of puppet theatre, visual theatre and object theatre.

Puppets - as figures that represent the yearnings, struggles and interior realities of human beings -, are understood in the widest sense, ranging from realistic looking wooden puppets to mind-bending robots made of synthetic materials.

Figures of Doubleness is part of IF Barcelona - Puppets, Machines and Strings, a far reaching event which, it is hoped, will take place regularly. This year there are three main areas: the exhibition, a programme of shows and staged events for adults and for family audiences, and a research and development project.

The exhibition is on both floors at Arts Santa Mònica. "The 7 Doors of Otherness" is on the first floor: a thematic journey through seven spaces which focuses on the idea of how we “double out” in figurative art. "The Puppet Larder" is on the second floor. This is an exhibition that focuses on the different types, techniques, and specific details of puppet theatre.

Many of the exhibits have been provided by those active today in this creative sector - individual artists, companies and associations. In terms of the living heritage that puppets represent, the numerous other objects on display come from museums; especially the MAE at the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona, and TOPIC in Tolosa, Guipuzkoa.
