Total Refusal: revealing the politics of mainstream video games
Open and free activity with a limited capacity of 55 people
With the presence of the Total Refusal collective.
Total Refusal is a research collective dedicated to artistic intervention and the appropriation of the most popular video games, revealing the political apparatus beyond the shiny, hyper-realistic textures of these media. This session will screen the short film How to disappear (2020), a piece that reflects on the meaning of war and the possibility of deserting, both in video games and in real life.
This will be followed by a live gaming session by the Total Refusal collective, who will also discuss the game with the audience.

Total Refusal is an artistic research collective formed by Susanna Flock, Michael Stumpf, Adrian Haim, Jona Kleinlein, Robin Klengel and Leonhard Müllner, dedicated to the critical analysis of the aesthetics and narratives of the most commercial video games. Based on the practice of situationist détournement, they propose public gaming sessions as spaces where it is possible to unveil the buried structure of the video game. Their works have been shown at the Berlinale, Doc Fortnight, IDFA in Amsterdam and the Venice Architecture Biennale.
