Screening and discussion with Josep-Maria Balanyà.

The career of the Brussels-based Barcelona pianist Josep-Maria Balanyà, with more than 40 years of work on stage and 28 recorded albums, has taken him from classical music and jazz to specialising in improvisation, experimental acoustic art and performance, fields in which he is highly acclaimed internationally. Balanyà is also an improviser, composer, improvising orchestra conductor, sound artist, painter and photographer.

He has studied in Barcelona and Switzerland (Swiss Jazz School and Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Bern), attended composition seminars with Helmut Lachenmann, Ivan Fedele and Walter Zimmermann, and improvisation workshops with Borah Bergman in New York.

Among his more than 140 works are multimedia projects for piano, voice, electronics, video, Butoh dance, sculpture and sound installations. His works as a solo pianist reflect his interest in complementing the pure sound of the piano with pieces for the prepared or extended piano. He has created sound sculptures and sound installations that can be performed by the audience/visitors.

He has worked with leading musicians, including Claudio Pontiggia, Hans Koch, Joachim Kühn, Franz Hautzinger, Carlos Zingaro, Michiel Borstlap, Walter Quintus, Ksenija Lukic, Das Neue Ensemble Hannover, Americo Rodrigues, Ulrich Mitzlaff, Mimi Barthélemy, Ramón López, among others. He has performed in festivals and radio programmes in many countries in Europe and America. He has been awarded several creation grants in Germany and Switzerland. He currently lives in Brussels and Barcelona.

On the borderline between music and performance, Balanyà has carried out his most imaginative actions, such as the recital in absolute darkness at the Sendesaal in Bremen or the concert for the chimes of the cathedral of Trier (Germany).

Balanyà's concerts are energetic rituals - one might say that he plays the piano with his whole body - where the presence of music made matter can be perceived.

In this session we will watch a selection of videos of his performances between 2000 and 2021.
