A children’s tale to reach social integration
Free entrance with limited places
The children’s tale The boat competition marks the finalization of the project “At last, a tale for everybody!” carried out by the Catalan Federation of Entities for Cerebral Palsy (FEPCCAT). This is a cultural project with social purposes, that wishes to make people aware of the cerebral palsy and achieve the social integration of people with disabilities through the promotion of shared reading. For that reason we have created an accessible book for all the children, whether they have disabilities or not.
The ships’ race is one of the few children’s tale that is fully accessible for all the boys and girls. The book is written in Catalan, Spanish, English and French; it includes illustrations, pictograms that make easier the act of reading, a braille version and also the transcription of the story to the sign language. It contains, finally, an audio-tale with the four languages previously mentioned. In short, the Catalan Federation of Entities for Cerebral Palsy (FEPCCAT) presents an original literary work. Its innovative format and design combines with a beautiful story about friendship and cooperation that has to work as an educational tool to make people aware of the cerebral palsy and achieve the social integration of people with disabilities. The boat competition acts as an evidence that literature can be used to change realities and to create, as well, a better world. This tale allows children to know, through shared reading, a reality that might be close, but that is generally ignored or not assimilated. If we accept the idea that children’s books educate future adult generations, we cannot look down on the efforts to normalize and promote the social integration of people with disabilities.
