Convocatòria Les Mòniques 2024/2025

On 9 April the call for applications for grants for research and experimentation in artistic mediation in residence for the period September 2024 - July 2025 at the Santa Mònica arts centre is open. The people selected will form part of Les Mòniques 24-25. The period to apply will end on 30 April.

  • Who are the residency grants at Santa Mònica aimed at and what is their objective?

The residency grants at Santa Mònica are aimed at transdisciplinary creators working in the relational or participatory field.

The aim is to promote the development of prototypes of artistic mediation devices that explore transmedia formats that open up the contents, discourses and questions that the centre contains and generates to different audiences.

Each of the transmedia devices developed during the residency acts as a prototype, i.e. an experimental format that responds to the logic of trial and error. The prototypes may or may not remain as a stable future device, at the disposal of Santa Mònica, but they do not have to respond to demands or objectives set by the centre. The prototypes generated and the future stable devices are not conceived as works with intellectual property and individual authorship, but as projects that can be replicated by future grant holders or the institution itself.

The three exhibition cycles that will take place between autumn 2024 and summer 2025 are based on the following questions: how can collective work as an artistic and political practice be made visible in a social context governed by individualistic logics; what are the links between competitiveness and standardisation in the world of sport and art and similar processes that can occur in the free market; how can art be used as an exercise in speculative fiction for the generation of potential stories?

  • What is it like and how is the stay in residence structured?

The residencies are designed as temporary stays of 11 months in a shared space at the Santa Mònica. During this time, the residents set up and participate in research processes that end up materialising in various prototypes of artistic mediation devices. At the same time, they are invited to share their lines of research and the resulting prototypes within the framework of other education and mediation programmes and projects of the centre, such as, for example, the curatorial training programme at the Santa Mònica (creating) Situations, the educational project Sojornar and the Festival de Cultura Raval(s) coordinated by the Tot Raval foundation.

The grant holders work on-site at Santa Mònica to promote the exchange of knowledge within the group and the collective dimension of the different research processes. The group of residents has a production grant for the development of prototypes and a follow-up of their stay and their research processes by the centre's management and technical team.

In addition, there are 5 intensive residency periods during which the artists and the Santa Mònica team in charge of accompanying the residency can collectively deepen, review and evaluate the research processes underway as well as the internal work dynamics and the relationship with the institution.

Residence calendar:

The 2024/2025 scholarship programme intensives will take place during one and a half consecutive days of the following weeks:

Intensive #1 (welcome, presentation of the group, immersion in the context and environment of Santa Mònica): 4 and 5 September.
Intensive #2: 6 and 7 November.
Intensive #3: 5 and 6 February.
