Climate shelter 2025

Call for the selection of an ephemeral architecture proposal for the Santa Mònica terrace

Call
Call open until 23.02.2025 | Període: juny – setembre 2025 | Basis of the call Proposal submission form
Refugi climàtic 2025

The Santa Mònica is calling for proposals for ephemeral architecture for the Climate Shelter 2025 project. The call is open to all those individuals or groups who wish to create an artistic installation that will transform the centre's terrace into a more attractive and habitable space during the hottest months of the year.

Proposals can be submitted until 23 February 2025, 23:59 pm.

The intervention proposal can be framed in any of the disciplines of architecture, landscaping, design and art, with the aim of establishing itself as a climatic refuge for the neighbourhood and the users of the centre.

In the intervention proposals, the following will be valued:

  • Integration with the environment, the centre and the current exhibition: Capacity for dialogue with the context and situation of the centre, the artistic interest and critical capacity of the proposal within the line of programming of the Santa Mònica. It will be valued that the proposal dialogues with the theme of the exhibition underway in the coming months, which will reflect on sport as a metaphor and symptom of the contemporary world. Through concepts such as the body, measurement and performance, competitiveness, spectacle and the media image, the exhibition will explore, with humour, irony and playfulness, the manifestations of mass sport and competition to provoke critical reflections on the logic of competitiveness that permeates today's society.
  • Visibility and versatility: Ability to transform the terrace into an attractive and visible space from the Rambla, habitable, accessible, comfortable and flexible, with the possibility of adapting to different situations.
  • Sustainability: Capacity to soften the climatic conditions of the terrace from May to September. It will be especially valued that the proposal is reusable, proposing a life after the project, that it can be installed in some other space of the territory and/or that the manufacturing or construction materials come from reuse, as well as the internal coherence in the sustainability of the project. The adaptation of the proposal to possible restrictions derived from a drought emergency will also be taken into account, avoiding elements that require an intensive use of water.
  • Technical feasibility: The objective of the call is to physically build an installation that will be maintained for five months on the terrace of the Santa Mònica. It is understood that the proposals must provide solutions that are resistant to the five months outdoors but with an ephemeral and dismountable vocation once the defined period has elapsed. Likewise, the proposals must follow the specifications in the ‘Location’ section of these rules, especially with regard to weight and other structural limitations. Experience in previous projects will be an asset.
  • Economic viability: It is understood that the proposal must be able to be carried out within the detailed budget and that the person or team selected must be able to issue the corresponding invoices.

What is on offer?

The proposals selected to move on to Phase 2 of development will receive:

  • Remuneration of 900 € for the technical development of the proposal (dossier, plans and details) in coordination with the Santa Mònica team for its correct interpretation. The payment will be conditional on the effective delivery of the technical dossier of the proposal within the established deadline.

The selected project that moves on to Phase 3 of production will receive:

  • A remuneration of €4,000 as a fee for the creation of the proposal. The amount of the contract may be paid in two instalments: a first payment of 50% and a second payment of the remaining amount once the work has been mounted and exhibited. The Santa Mònica will apply a criterion of economic compensation for groups. Therefore, when the commission is made to a pre-existing and defined group of a maximum of 5 people, an additional 25% will have to be added to this rate for each additional person.
Invoicing will have to be done by electronic invoice, in accordance with the indications of the centre. The ICEC will carry out the monitoring and control of the services provided by means of the mechanisms and indicators it considers necessary. For these purposes, the team or professional must provide the information in accordance with the specifications and deadlines agreed by the ICEC.
  • The centre will assume the material production costs of the selected proposal up to a maximum of €15,000.
  • Transport and assembly support (a maximum of 4 people from the centre's assembly team for one week).
  • Communication and dissemination of the proposal.
